The CPSC is an independent agency of the US government. It is the regulatory body for product safety and compliance for the US and is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction.
The CPSIA controls the amount of lead and phthalates in consumer products designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger, as well as setting out requirements for flammability testing. These regulations are law and testing of products is mandatory. This safety standard has been widely adopted voluntarily to control the amount of lead in all products sold within the USA.
